What to Check Before You Buy a Portable Dishwasher

1. Capacity: how many place settings do you need?

Countertop models hold 4 to 6 place settings. One place setting is a dinner plate, side plate, bowl, cup, and cutlery for one person.

One person, light cooking: 4 place settings. One person, heavy cooking: 5 place settings. Two people: 5 to 6 place settings. Three or more: a countertop model will feel limiting.

Tall glasses, mixing bowls, and pots usually don't fit. Check the interior height before buying if you have a lot of tall items.

2. Connection type: does your faucet work?

Most countertop dishwashers use a faucet adapter. The adapter screws onto the aerator at the tip of your faucet. Standard adapters fit 15/16-inch male and 55/64-inch female threads. Most kitchen faucets in the US use one of these.

Pull-out and pull-down spray faucets often don't work with standard adapters. The hose is inside the faucet and there's no fixed tip to attach to. If you have a pull-out faucet, check the brand's website for a compatible adapter before buying.

Tank-fill models don't use a faucet at all. You fill a built-in reservoir manually before each cycle. These work anywhere but are slower and often limited to lighter cycles.

3. Wash programs: how many do you actually use?

Most people use 3 programs. Normal for daily loads. Quick for glasses and cups. Heavy for pots and stuck-on food. A 4-program model covers this. Extra programs like Baby Care, Eco, and Delay Start are nice but not necessary for most people.

If you cook a lot or often clean cutting boards, a sanitize or high-temperature program is worth having. If you work from home and want to run a quiet cycle at specific times, Delay Start is useful.

4. Dimensions: will it fit on your counter?

Measure your counter space before buying. Most countertop dishwashers are 17 to 21 inches wide, 17 to 20 inches deep, and 17 to 19 inches tall. You need about 19 inches of height under your upper cabinets. If your cabinets are lower, measure before you order.

Also check how close the unit is to your sink. The drain hose is usually 5 to 6 feet long. You need the unit within that distance so the hose reaches without stretching tight.
